India beat West Indies by eight wickets in the first T20 international at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday, 6 October 2026. Captain Shreyas Iyer scored his maiden T20I century, finishing unbeaten on 102, as India chased down 172 in 14.4 overs with 32 balls to spare.

How the chase went

India were in trouble early. Abhishek Sharma went for 21 and Sanju Samson for 11 inside the powerplay, and Iyer walked in at 35 for 2. India needed 70 from 60 balls at the halfway point of the chase. Iyer then accelerated from a 28-ball fifty to a 42-ball century, according to reports. Outlets differ slightly on his ball count (42 or 43).

He took Akeal Hosein for a six and a four in the 13th over, then hit Matthew Forde for three sixes and a four in a 24-run over. Ishan Kishan finished on 37 not out, and the pair added 137 for the third wicket.

  • Iyer: 102 not out, 10 fours and 6 sixes
  • Kishan: 37 not out
  • Third-wicket partnership: 137 runs

West Indies innings

West Indies were bowled out for 171 in 19.1 overs. Sherfane Rutherford scored 56 and Shai Hope 52. Debutant Naman Dhir took 3 for 31, according to Olympics.com.

Records and what comes next

It was India's 10th successive T20I victory. Iyer also became the first Indian captain to score a T20I century while leading the side, and it was his second century in as many T20 appearances at the Ekana Stadium this year.

India lead the five-match series 1-0. The second T20I is in Ranchi on 9 October, the third in Indore on 11 October, the fourth in Hyderabad on 14 October and the fifth in Bengaluru on 17 October.

In context: India had already won the preceding three-match ODI series 2-1, so the visitors now need to turn around a series in which they have lost the opening match of both formats.
